What is DIPG? DIPG, or diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, is a type of brain tumor found in an area of the brainstem known as the pons. The name diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma describes how the tumor grows, where it is found, and what kinds of cells give rise to the tumor.

They occur primarily in adults (9.4% of all primary brain and central nervous system tumors) but are also found in children (4% of all primary brain tumors). Glioma growth was inhibited by 90 to 95 percent in animal models. An early study of patients with other types of cancer is evaluating a small molecule that also appears to block VEGF activity. Neuroscientists believe the molecule may be a simple way to starve glioma tumors and are testing it in animal models.

More than half of all primary brain tumours are gliomas.. These tumours develop from the supporting cells (glial cells) in the brain or spinal cord. Different types of glioma are named after the types of glial cell. Childhood brain stem glioma treatment options can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, cerebral spinal fluid diversion, observation, and targeted therapy. About 33 percent of all brain tumors are gliomas, which originate in the glial cells that surround and support neurons in the brain, including astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and ependymal cells. A glioma is a type of tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or the spine. Gliomas comprise about 30 percent of all brain tumors and central nervous system tumours, and 80 percent of all malignant brain tumours.

There are four grades of brain tumors; however, gliomas are most often referred to as "low grade" (grades I or II) or "high grade" (grades III or IV), based on the tumor’s growth potential and aggressiveness. Brain stem glioma. Glioma in the brain stem is very rare. The brain stem is the lowest part of the brain, that connects with the spinal cord.

It controls body functions that we don’t usually think about such as breathing. Brain stem gliomas are more common in children than in adults. Mixed Glioma (also called Oligoastrocytoma): These tumors usually contain a high proportion of more than one type of cell, most often astrocytes and oligodendrocytes.
